Chateau Cheval Blanc (French for “White Horse Castle”), is a winery in Saint-Émilion in the Bordeaux wine region of France. As of 2012, its wines are one of only four wines to receive Premier Grand Cru Classé (A) in the Saint-Émilion wine classification, along with Château Angélus, Château Ausone and Château Pavie. Its wines are made from “big” vines with an average age of up to 45 years. Wines tend to require 10 years of bottling and can last well over half a century. The estate’s second wine is named Le Petit Cheval. Chateau Cheval Blanc won its first medal at the 1862 Universal Exhibition in London. Then won the first gold medal at the Universal Exhibition of 1878 in Paris. This also appears on the bottle label to mark the event. Cheval Blanc achieved the highest distinction in the first Saint-Emilion wine classification in 1954. Become a member of the exclusive “Club 9” consisting of 9 prominent Bordeaux producers.
