The story began when a Roman master, the aptly named Master Florus, gave his name to the village of Fleurie. Several centuries later, in 949, the owner of Villa Ponciago (Château de Poncié’s former Latin name), donated his estate to the Abbey of Cluny in order to “save his soul” they said. Located in the North-East of the Fleurie appellation, Villa Ponciago has always helped to build the reputation of this Cru described as producing fine, elegant wines, but also enjoys its own special fame based on its history and terroirs. Already at the end of the 19th century, Vermorel & Danguy and A.Budker designated the best plots in Fleurie as «Grands Crus» and «First Class» in their classifications. More than 1,000 years after the creation of the domain, when they came to Fleurie, the Henriot family decided to restore life and soul to the domain and to revive this beautiful terroir with a prestigious past. At the end of the 19th century, the domain’s wines were being sold at the same price as those of Clos Vougeot!
